Mercedes Mae Engen passed away Aug. 27, 2017. She was born in Blue Lake on Sept. 2, 1928 to Robert Irwin McIndoe and Marian McIndoe (Silva). She grew up in Smith River. She attended Rowdy Creek School and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1946.

She worked as a seamstress and in the dry-cleaning business. In addition to spending time with her family, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling to Mexico and Arizona, clam digging, baking and spending time with her grandchildren. She also had a special love for animals.

She is survived by her three children, son Frank Mendez, son Larry Mendez (Doris) daughter Vickie Murray (Walter), along with seven grandchildren, Scott Mendez (Mari), Greg Wheelon, Chad Mendez, Neely Brouillette (Matt), Dale Mendez (Maya), Brennan Mendez and Spencer Mendez (Jeanna). She had seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Lois Gomes of Modesto and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence E. Engen, brothers John White, Karl White, Bobby McIndoe, and sister Joy Williamson.

The family extends a special thank you to her caregivers Lydia and Peggy.
