Roberta Evelyn Garrett (Bobbie) was born Oct. 1, 1931, in Briar Creek, Missouri. She died April 9, 2018, in St. Helena, from complications following heart surgery.
Bobbie was born to Wayne and Faith Van Dusen in Briar Creek, Missouri in 1931. Her family migrated west during the Great Depression, settling first in the small lumber town of Tionesta in Modoc County, in 1937. After a short time living in Ashland, Oregon, Bobbie’s family bought a small dairy farm in Klamath in 1946, that overlooked the Klamath River and Redwood Coast. Bobbie spent over 50 years of her life on the Klamath ranch later named the Van Dusen-Garrett Ranch when Bobbie’s husband joined the family business.
Bobbie graduated from Del Norte High School in 1949. She met her husband James (Pat) Garrett while working in a peach cannery in Medford, Oregon. They married in 1953, and started a family shortly after with the birth of their first son Jimmy a year later. Bobbie and Pat raised three children and lived together happily on the ranch in Klamath until Pat’s death in 1995. Following his death, Bobbie moved to Hidden Valley Lake in Lake County to be close to her three children and six grandchildren.
Bobbie traveled all over, often remarking that every place had its own beauty. Bobbie loved to play pinochle and was an active member of the Hidden Valley Lake pinochle club. She loved reading, gardening, bird watching and playing Jeopardy. In her later years, much of her life was devoted to being “Grandma Bobbie” to her grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who remember her fondly. She lived through floods, wildfires and the death of her only daughter.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her husband, James Garrett, and her daughter, Virginia Andresen. She is survived by her sister, Jessie Thomas, of Brookings, Oregon; her brother, John Van Dusen, of Klamath; her sons, Jim and Tom Garrett and their wives, Shari and Sharon; son-in-law, Howard Andresen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held April 28, at 1 p.m. at the Middletown Methodist Church, at 15851 Armstrong St., followed by interment in the Del Norte Veterans Cemetery in Crescent City at a later date.
