My mother and her parents, my father’s mother and her parents weren’t U.S. citizens. Did they come here illegally? No, they were all born on this continent but they were Native. They were Indians.
Indian men, women and children were removed from their homes, their land, their culture. They were relocated to places they knew nothing about. The government said they couldn’t be U.S. citizens. It’s the law. The government made the rule.
Slave traders kidnapped men, women and children; torn from their families and friends, taken from their homes. Because they were black, the U.S. government said it was OK to own these people. It’s the law. The government made the rule.
In the 1930’s, Jewish men, women and children, were taken from their homes, neighborhoods and friends and put in concentration camps. It was OK because it’s the law. The government made the rule.
In 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Men, women and children were rounded up, taken from their homes, friends, neighborhoods to internment camps. These people were U.S. citizens but they were Japanese. They looked different than us. That was OK. It’s the Law. The government made the rule.
The German’s killed American soldiers: black, red, white and yellow. There were no internment camps for German citizens of the U.S. Was it because they looked like us? It was OK because it’s the law. The government made the rule.
Now it’s 2017. Time to round up children brought here illegally. These children didn’t come to the U.S. because they wanted to be here. These children learned reading, writing and arithmetic, civics, all the required courses. These children made friends and knowledge of Del Norte County and it’s beauty. But time to round them up and send them to a place where they have no friends, neighbors or knowledge of the area. Because it’s the law. The government made the rule.
Go ahead, be a coward. Say it: it’s the law. The government made the rule.
