So, on the recommendation of Covered California, I went to Del Norte Social Services on March 5 to apply for Medi-Cal to supplement my Medicare.

I was basically treated like a nonentity who didn’t even deserve to be looked at while spoken too. I was handed a gigantic booklet of paperwork and told to fill it out and the hours I could drop it off.

Luckily, I’m not desperate and actually have somewhere I can go to try and fill this (approximately 15-page form) out.

I can only imagine what it would be like if I were desperate, ill and/or homeless.

So, the next time someone tells you “there’s help available but they won’t use it,” I’m here to tell you that I completely understand why someone would walk out of that office feeling like crap, go find a bottle of cheap wine and give up.
