Del Norte County is coming together like never before to tackle one of our toughest challenges – homelessness.
We’ve established a first of its kind innovative partnership between the state, Del Norte County and Crescent City that will drive local solutions to make our community stronger.
We invite you to join us this Thursday (April 18) for a special town hall meeting to update the community on our progress on the Del Norte County Homeless and Housing Plan, talk about next steps and, most importantly, seek input from neighbors. We’re gathering at 6 p.m. at Joe Hamilton Elementary School, where state, county and city representatives will discuss next steps on housing and services for homeless residents.
Homelessness is a crisis across California, the North Coast and right here in Del Norte County. We know that homelessness in Del Norte County is a growing concern and with nearly one in four Del Norte County residents living in poverty, we must come together and do something about it.
While our focus is on local solutions, the state is doing its part – investing nearly $1 million for short-term emergency homeless services and long-term permanent supportive homeless housing that will be wrapped with both mental health and drug/alcohol addiction services.
The funds are coming from the state’s No Place Like Home initiative, which was established in 2016 to address the reality that serving the state’s chronically homeless was costing taxpayers approximately $100,000 per person each year due to interactions with law enforcement, unreimbursed hospital stays and time in county jails. The other funds – approximately $150,000 – can be invested this year on short term, emergency solutions such as homeless shelter funding, mobile showers, paying rent for a family who is about to become homeless along with other data-driven results.
It had become clear that the cost of doing nothing was far greater than the cost of providing the housing, services and support desperately needed for decades. The truth is that providing housing and wraparound services will save taxpayers millions in the long run and produces life-changing results.
While there’s a lot of work ahead of us, we’re excited to share with you what’s been accomplished and we look forward to working with you on this important plan in the coming months.
