Due to several conflicts, the Del Norte girls tennis team only had four players compete at the fourth Humboldt-Del Norte League meet of the season at Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club in Fortuna. The Warriors in attendance played well, however, with three of the four girls shooting their lowest score of the year.

“It is a beautiful course. I think everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Del Norte head coach Sara Sampels. “I think overall we got better with our short games, which is good to see because that is what we have been working on over the last two weeks. Now we just need to put the pieces together.”

Carolyn Cochran shaved 14 strokes off of her best score with a round of 134 for the best Del Norte score of the day.

“Our goal today was to triple-bogey (three strokes above par) or less on every hole,” Sampels said. “Carolyn was able to succeed with that on pretty much every hole. The main reason she was able to do that was because of her putting. She had some excellent putts today; it was the best I had seen her do all season.”

Sampels said Jadyn Gorbet struggled a little with her chipping and putting throughout the day, but drove the ball pretty well. She ended the day with a round of 138 — three strokes lower than her previous best score.

Elsie Swiderski and Brooke Winningham rounded out the Warriors’ lineup in Fortuna with identical scores of 152. It was Winningham’s lowest score of the year by six strokes.

“Brooke said she was able to par on a couple holes today, which is pretty phenomenal for how long she has been playing,” Sampels said. “She was pretty proud about that.”
