Ocean conditions have been better this week than they have been in a while, allowing anglers and several anglers were able to get out far enough to land some tuna, which are still hanging out in deep water off the Northern California and Southern Oregon Coasts. It has also been a solid week for bottomfishermen out of Crescent City.
But with halibut season closed in Northern California, and bottomfishing closed in Oregon, many anglers attentions are starting to shift to local rivers.
It has been a promising week for anglers on the Wild Rivers Coast with increasing numbers of salmon caught at the mouth of both the Smith and Chetco rivers this week.
Starting on Sunday, the Smith River will be subject to low flow closures, which prohibits all fishing above Rowdy Creek on the river when the water level is too low. When the low flow closure is in effect, anglers can still fish from Rowdy Creek downstream to the Mouth of the Smith River.
Anglers can check on the status of the Smith River by calling the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s low flow closure hotline at 707-822-3164.
Meanwhile, although the fall salmon season is closed on the Klamath River this year, anglers were having good luck targeting steelhead on the river early in the week. Steelhead fishing reportedly slowed a little later in the week, however, as a bit of rain helped the fish move through the system.
On the ocean
It had been a couple weeks since anglers have been able to get out in search of tuna on the Wild Rivers Coast, but Cpt. Keith Richcreek, of Pacific West Coast Ocean Fishing Guide Service said he hauled in about 26 tuna in one trip, and heard of several boats that caught even more.
Richcreek said he wasn’t expecting the tuna to stick around much longer, however, and may be gone by the time the ocean calms back down after a predicted bumpy weekend.
Bottomfishing has also remained hot out of Crescent City throughout the week, with some nice lingcod and rockfish, especially black snappers, being hauled in throughout the week.
