The Del Norte boys soccer team went toe-to-toe with Eureka in Humboldt County on Saturday. The Warriors were able to dominate for stretches of the game, but Del Norte struggled to get past the Loggers’ defense and Eureka was able to escape with a 3-1 victory.
“A tale of missed opportunities by Del Norte, not dissimilar to the loss in the first meeting at Del Norte,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu. “The boys played well and competed but we have got to learn to not lose games that we are, if not superior, on par with the opposition in. We were very wasteful in goal and paid the price.”
The Loggers took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a long shot from outside the 18-yard box that found its way into the lower right corner of the Warriors’ goal in the 20th minute and the score stayed even until halftime.
Del Norte started to take control of play early in the second half, but couldn’t connect on an equalizer.
Eureka was whistled for a foul in the box against Del Norte’s Ramsey Gonzalez, setting up a Warrior penalty kick in the 50th minute. Senior Alex Carrillo’s shot was blocked by the Loggers’ goalkeeper, but Carrillo was the first player to get the rebound. His second shot was blocked by a Eureka defender, however, ending the Warrior threat.
“The penalty miss was very pivotal to the eventual outcome because that would have leveled the game at the time and given us a chance to go for a winner since we were outright dominant for a long stretch in the second half,” Sanyaolu said.
Five minutes later Del Norte had another golden opportunity to score slip through its fingers.
Sanyaolu said Del Norte was dominating possession of the ball when Aaron Mignon found himself with the ball at his feet and right infront of the Loggers’ goal, but his chip shot hit the top post and bounced out, preserving Eureka’s 1-0 lead.
Eureka doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute on a penalty kick after an errant tackle in the box by Del Norte. Seven minutes later Eureka went ahead 3-0 off of a missed clearance by the Warrior defense.
Del Norte broke up the Loggers’ clean sheet in the 74th minute. Ramsey Gonzalez beat a defender off the dribble on the right side and crossed the ball in to freshman Elvin Ramirez. Remirez nailed a low shot past the keeper to cut the lead to 3-1.
With the loss Del Norte falls to 5-3 overall this season. The Warriors are set to be back on the road on Wednesday for a game against Ferndale, kicking off at 3:30 p.m.
Del Norte topped Ferndale 7-0 when the teams met in Crescent City on Sept. 13.
