Del Norte’s Julia DeSolenni was the second fastest female runner at the Humboldt-Del Norte League cross country championships on Saturday for the second year in a row.
The Warrior junior has been solidly in second place at nearly every meet this season, but DeSolenni ran perhaps her best race in her last meet of the year.
“She ran a really good race and closed the gap on the leader — she ran about as well as she could run,” said Del Norte head coach Kirk Burrows. “She finished about 18 seconds behind the leader, and she had been almost 45 seconds behind all year. She ran a really smart race. She stayed back and was really strong in the last mile.”
DeSolenni’s second place finish earns her one of seven White Stars awarded at the meet, along with an HDNL medal. DeSolenni’s finish also qualifies her to compete in the North Coast Section Meet of Champions, though Burrows said DeSolenni will not run in the NCS meet due to a scheduling conflict with college visits.
Both of Del Norte’s varsity boys runners were sick on Saturday and were unable to compete. In the boys junior varsity run the Warriors had three competitors, led by sophomore Steven Berry who took sixth place. Freshman Kaleo Abasolo took 16th in the boys JV run, just ahead of his freshman brother Isaiah Abasolo.
