The Del Norte girls tennis team has been dominant as a team all season long, but the Warriors will be in for a significant jump in competition when the team travels to No. 1 seeded Piedmont for their first round matchup in the North Coast Section Division II team championships today, starting at 2 p.m.
The Warriors completed an undefeated season with a 14-0 overall record to capture the team’s second straight Humboldt-Del Norte League team championship this season. Del Norte has three seniors in its top six who have won a total of 35 of their last 36 team matches and are currently on a 16-match winning streak.
Despite the team’s success, Del Norte was awarded the No. 16 seed in the tournament and the Warriors will have to travel to No. 1 seeded Piedmont, which has won the last four NCS Division II team titles in a row.
Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar said the Warriors’ low seed was likely due to Del Norte’s competition throughout the year. Escobar said teams from the HDNL have historically struggled in the postseason against teams from the Bay Area.
“The likelihood that we will win the entire match is very minute,” Escobar said. “Our goal is to be competitive and to maybe win a few games, and if we win an individual match or two we will consider that a huge victory.”
The NCS team championships have a slightly different format than the HDN meets. At NCS, matches consist of four singles matches and three doubles matches, but no player is allowed to play both singles and doubles.
