Coming off of a strong showing at the Yreka Volleyball Tournament, the Del Norte Warriors volleyball team hosted the Gold Beach Panthers on Tuesday to take a 3-0 win for their first regular game of the season.

The Warriors managed a solid 25-18 win to kick things off. They capitalized on their strong opening, scoring consistently on the Panthers in the second set to take a wide 25-5 victory. The Panthers refused to go down without a fight though, clawing their way back up to fall just short as the Warriors pulled a narrow 25-23 win in the final set to take the match.

The Warriors played a strong game against the small Panthers team, but had trouble maintaining the momentum they gained in the first two sets in through to the final set.

“We have a lot to work on, but our biggest thing is to stay more consistent with our energy. We go up and down, up and down all game,” said Warriors coach Sara Levi. “Our defense did very well, but our offense needs to keep their energy up to keep hitting the ball.”

With a strong defensive effort, Levi intends to buckle down and focus on the team’s offensive skills before going up against a larger team next week. Levi says that once she can train the girls to keep their energy up, things should come together so they can keep a consistent effort from play to play.

The Warriors play again next week when they will host the Brookings Bruins on Monday at 5 p.m. After that, they’ll have a week of practice before heading to Eureka on Sept. 18 to play their first conference match against the Loggers at 6:30 p.m.
