The Del Norte boys soccer team jumped all over Ferndale on Wednesday in the Warriors’ first road game of the season. Del Norte took a lead just five minutes into the game and ran away with a 15-0 victory over the Wildcats.

“It was a very dominant performance,” said Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu. “The score apart, we passed the ball well. That was the high point of today’s game, not really the result. We played well, passed the ball, we moved and we got the goal.”

The Warriors were led offensively by a pair of hat tricks. Both Brandon Lopez and Daniel Bertelsen scored three goals apiece for the team’s first hat tricks of the season.

Del Norte jumped out to an early lead in the fifth minute when Jared Castro got his head on a cross pass from Jose Regalado and the Warriors never looked back.

Del Norte continued to dominate possession while also creating lots of scoring opportunities to take an 8-0 lead into the break at halftime.

In addition to hat tricks by Lopez and Bertelsen, the Warriors got one goal apiece from Castro, Regalado, Scott Peters, Sebastian Gonzalez, Isaiah Sherman, Adrian Chaves, Chase Gardner, Ro-tah Shorty, and Gannon Machado.

Sanyaolu estimated that roughly half of Del Norte’s goals in Ferndale came off of cross passes from the wing. That has been an strong emphasis for Sanyaolu so far this season.

“That is going to be our strength — having width, crossing the ball, and the forwards and people coming in from the midfield connecting,” Sanyaolu said.

In the second half, Sanyaolu said the Warriors got a chance to play all of their available players.

“I really love substitutions,” Sanyaolu said. “Everybody got to play enough minutes — everyone was happy.”

Freshman Austin Wadsworth got his first varsity start of the season as the Warriors’ keeper and picked up the clean sheet. Shorty, Del Norte’s regular starting keeper, played in the field.

With the win the Warriors improve to 2-0-1 overall this season. Del Norte will be back on the road on Saturday, taking on Eureka at about 1 p.m.
