In a lot of ways it has been a difficult senior season for Del Norte’s top cross country runner, Julia de Solenni.
The two-time Humboldt-Del Norte League runner up has battled illness and injury in her third and final season on the cross country team, but she wrapped up her career with a strong performance on Saturday in Arcata for a fourth place finish in the league and her third White Star.
De Solenni’s time of 20:15 at the HDN Championships in Arcata was a full minute faster than her previous best time this year. It put her within six seconds of a second place finish and almost 90 second ahead of fifth place.
The senior’s has been working hard to battle back from an illness that prevented much conditioning during the summer, and an injury that kept de Solenni from starting to run until mid-September.
“She didn’t get to start running until September 15 after six months off, so we are really pleased with her progress over a six week time,” said Del Norte head coach Kirk Burrows. “I think she really did a heck of a job. She worked hard and accomplished about all that she could. The injury kind of kept her for competing for the title, but she ran really well.”
De Solenni was Del Norte’s only female runner to compete in Arcata on Saturday. She was joined in Arcata by senior Ginu Thao, who finished 24th overall in the boys race (20:03). Del Norte sophomore Kaleo Abasolo (22:30), who came in 36th place in Arcata.
