The Del Norte boys and girls basketball teams will kick off their postseason this week in the Nikolai Tournament which officially began on Monday for the girls, while the boys tournament starts today.
The Del Norte boys team grabbed the No. 2 seed from the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 after finishing with a 4-4 record in league games this season. The Warriors will be at home today, hosting the No. 3 seed from the Big 5. Arcata and McKinleyville ended in a tie for third place after the regular season, and met for a play in game on Monday to decide who will face the Warriors, starting at 7 p.m. today.
The winner of today’s game in Crescent City will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, where they will face Little 4 champion Hoopa, who went undefeated at 6-0 in league games.
Fortuna is the No. 1 seed in the Big 5 this year after going 8-0 in the Big 5. They will open up play on Thursday against the winner of today’s Little 4 matchup between St. Bernard’s and South Fork.
The Warrior girls have a bye through the first round of the Nikolai Tournament after going undefeated at 8-0 to capture Del Norte’s first ever Big 5 championship in girls basketball.
The Warriors are scheduled to tip off their postseason on Wednesday, taking on the winner of Monday’s first round game between the second and third place teams in the HDN Little 4 this season. No. 2 Hoopa hosted No. 3 Ferndale in that contest on Monday.
On the other side of the bracket, Little 4 No. 1 St. Bernard’s will take on the winner of the Big 5 first round matchup between No. 2 Eureka and No. 3 McKinleyville.
