The Del Norte baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday with a dominating 14-0 victory in five innings shortened due to the mercy rule.

“It was good,” said Del Norte head coach Travis Johnson. “We got to have four pitchers throw at least part of an inning, which is good because we have a big tournament coming up. They all threw strikes and we hit the ball. It was a pretty good day.”

Del Norte rotated juniors AJ Schultz, Giovanni Gonzalez and Kaden Ritter, along with sophomore Daylen O’Reilly on the pitching mound in Gold Beach. Johnson said all four pitchers were able to pound the strike zone as the Warriors picked up their first shutout of the season.

Johnson said the Warriors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never trailed as they scored runs in all five innings on their way to the win.

Johnson said it was good to see the offensive output by his young Del Norte team. He said the Warriors looked like they lacked confidence at the plate when they opened the season with a 9-2 loss on the road in Ferndale back on Feb. 22, but that didn’t seem to be an issue on Wednesday.

“It was a lot better,” Johnson said. “We started out smashing the ball, so their confidence was a lot better.”

With the victory Del Norte improves to 1-1 overall this season. But the Warriors didn’t have much time to celebrate the season’s first win on Wednesday as the team was back in action at the Yreka Tournament on Thursday and Friday, and are scheduled to wrap up play in Yreka today with a game scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

Del Norte is also scheduled to host Gold Beach on Monday with the first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Del Norte junior varsity baseball team was also in action on Wednesday with a road game in Eureka. Although the Warrior JV fell 8-1, Johnson said the team showed a lot of improvement.

“The kids played way better than they did the first time (against the Loggers),” Johnson said. “So they are improving tremendously.”

The Del Norte junior varsity will be back in action today with a doubleheader in Fortuna. The Warrior JV will officially wrap up its season on March 29-30 at the Arcata Tournament, which includes all the JV teams in the HDN.
