The Redwood Elementary School track and field program kicked off its track season on Thursday, with 39 athletes from sixth through eighth grades competing at Humboldt State University against athletes from various schools in Humboldt County.
“It was great to see the kids compete and have fun,” said Redwood head coach Scott Lindsay. “For a lot of the kids it was their first track meet ever.”
Highlights from the meet included a first place finish for the Redwood eighth-grade boys 4x100 meter relay team with a time of 52.86.
Kayleb Fernandes took first place in the 200 meter dash, just ahead of teammate Alderon McCovey.
Eighth-grader Giana Taylor took first place in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.03 seconds.
Jaylee Ritter won the seventh grade girls shot put with a throw of 24 feet and Breann Winingham won the seventh grade girls high jump by clearing 4 feet.
Bryson Price finished in second place in the boys eighth grade 100 meter dash in 12.06, just ahead of Fernandes who took third in 21.13.
Kaitlyn Machado took second place in the girls discus with a throw of 64’3”.
Redwood will be back in action with a meet in Brookings on April 20. All the local middle schools will wrap up the season with three meets in Crescent City, all at Del Norte High School. Those meets will be held on May 8, May 15, and May 22.
