The Del Norte boys soccer team is already back on the pitch with the season still more than three months away.

Although the Warriors season won’t officially start until September, head coach David Sanyaolu said the team has been excited to get back into action following the most successful season in school history in 2018, highlighted by a runner up finish in the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.

“In previous years when the season is over we have all gone our seperate ways,” Sanyaolu said. “When you have good results people want to either maintain status quo or improve. So they said, ‘Let’s keep playing.’ So after school when the weather is good we just come out here and practice — just keeping it simple and doing basic things right. It is fun, it is good exercise for the boys, and they are improving on their skills.”

Coaches said the team will try to get together at least a couple times per week to keep the players skills sharp. Many of the players will also take part in the Liga La Costa recreation league, which is just starting up for the season in Smith River with games on Sundays.

Tryouts for the 2019 boys soccer team are expected to be held in mid-August. Sanyaolu said Del Norte also has a preseason scrimmage planned for Aug. 16 against a team from Lake Tahoe.

“I guess they heard about our exploits and they want to play us,” Sanyaolu said. “So it is nice to hear that they know us now, and they want to play us.”
