Rebuilding Gaza & Israel, a path forward through shared humanity

8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Presented by Shalom Humboldt

Alkhatib is an accomplished activist whose beliefs, while decidedly pro-Palestinian, do not neatly align with many positions of "pro-Palestine" and "pro-Israel" communities; he subsequently faces both praise and vitriol from both communities. "Since the October 7 massacre, Alkhatib's life has been deeply impacted by the loss of thirty-three of his immediate and extended family members, who were killed by three different Israeli airstrikes. Still, he aims to play a part in breaking the cycle of dehumanization and defying the cycle of hatred, incitement, violence, and revenge."

The fee includes two nights in a private room, delicious meals, all art materials, a plein air painting session overlooking the river, and more. Take home your paintings along with plenty of beautiful memories. Reserve now (save by registering early) About the Artist, Maureen McGarry Maureen McGarry has spent decades painting the landscapes of Northern California, always returning to watercolor for what she calls its closeness to nature — pure pigments, water as solvent, and an honesty that other mediums can’t quite match. She chose to live in Humboldt County for its breathtaking natural environment, and that sense of wonder has never left her work. A former Artist-in-Residence with the Redwood Parks Conservancy, Maureen knows this landscape intimately — and knows how to help others see it through an artist’s eye. Teaching is equally central to her life. She believes that finding a way to express the vision inside each of us is what makes us whole, and she has spent her career helping people of all ages and experience levels find their muse. At this retreat she brings that philosophy to one of the most inspiring landscapes in California.

Saturday, November 7, 2026 – Sunday, November 8, 2026

If It’s November, It Must Be Time For The Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival! The Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival has become one of the best mushroom events in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California — the festival is only a 30-minute drive from Crescent City, California in Del Norte County! Make your plans to spend the weekend for this very popular festival. The festival is being held at Chetco Brewing Company (830 Railroad Street in downtown Brookings) and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm both Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $5.00 for adults and covers one or both days; once you’ve paid, your colored wristband is all you need to show to come and go from the main hall during the festival. (Kids 12 and under are free to attend, as long as they’re with a paying adult). One of the highlights of the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival is the huge display, with over 200+ varieties of wild mushrooms that are locally collected and identified for you. Those who have attended our festival in the past are always in awe of the sheer number and diversity of wild mushrooms our team gathers for this display. We will also have a select group of vendors selling all things mushroomy, along with some local food trucks and beverages to keep you happy! There will be eight mushroom identification hikes into the forest, a free kids workshop, a culinary workshop (with yummy samples), and two Intro to Wild Mushrooms full-day workshops that include lunch on Saturday or Sunday. Plus, many more leading experts talking about mycology and mushroom-everything. If you want to hear a lecture from one of our visiting experts or join a mushroom identification hike, tickets go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026 at www.wildriversmushroomfestival.com. The cost for each lecture is $20.00, and hikes will be $10.00.  Make plans now to attend the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival. For more information, please email [email protected], or call 541-661-1385

BoatSmith Whitewater Festival

Presented by Del Norte Visitor's Guide

Friday, February 12, 2027 – Tuesday, February 16, 2027

The annual BoatSmith Whitewater Festival in the Smith River National Recreation Area invites paddlers to a downriver race on the largest undammed river in California, the Smith River. This event brings the boating community together for a whitewater-filled weekend with boat races on Class 2/3 and Class 4/5 rapids, live music, food, raffles and more! The actual location is announced right before the event (tune to their Facebook page for updates!) but you’ll be floating somewhere on the scenic Smith. Part of this is because of the fluctuation in river flows, and dealing with the ever-changing river environment. They’ll be raffling off some really awesome gear from cool sponsors. There will also be a Friday night film, live music, awards, and a dance party on Saturday. Sunday’s festivities include a mass float on the Smith River and a river clean-up party on Sunday. The event is back at Patrick Creek Campground where you can camp with showers, hookups, and bathrooms (fee sites). There is also dispersed camping in the usual spots, and plenty of nearby vacation rentals. The Hiouchi Motel and Patrick Creek Lodge are both great options for nearby lodging. Breathing Bridges is a unique art-meets-river-floating adventure that only takes place one time per year – don’t miss it! Come experience the magic of dance, art, poetry and music happening along the riverbanks of the sparkling Smith River in Del Norte County, California at the annual Breathing Bridges event from Dirt and Glitter happening every year on the Sunday over Labor Day Weekend. Thanks to the generous support of the Yurok Tribe’s Klamath Promise Neighborhood Initiative, DiRT & Glitter is able to offer this experience free to the community this year. You can book a seat on a raft with Redwood Rides and be expertly guided through the show, or book a kayak and paddle yourself along the calm waters of the Smith River. Prices range from $106 to $132.50 per person. Children are welcome. Tandem and single kayaks available. You can also bring your own raft or kayak to watch this on-the-water art performance unfold around every bend in the Smith River! Get more information and take the free shuttle to Second Bridge.
