The Del Norte Youth Council will host its annual Middle School Day Camp on Jan. 25, this year featuring 16 different workshops.
The youth council consists of seven high school students ranging from freshmen to seniors. In 2015, council members created a one-day camp that would offer local youth an opportunity to learn about a variety of issues through activities and engagement.
One of this year’s workshops, “You Matter,” will feature keynote speaker Richard Kuo, who’ll conduct a program on becoming a better leader, working with teams, and life skills.
Another workshop, Above the Influence, is a social media campaign the council has been developing, in collaboration with Building Healthy Communities, to promote local alternatives to encourage youth to avoid drug and alcohol use.
Council members also will be collaborating with community partners such as the North Coast Rape Crisis Team, which offers women’s self-defense, to build youth’s awareness and learn self-control.
SnapED will conduct Setting the Stage for Healthy Choices to assist youth with healthy activities and meals.
Also, the Sources of Strength club from Crescent Elk Middle School, collaborating with Coastal Connections, will hold a workshop to provide youth with a suicide prevention model.
