The weather cooperated and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1381 in Crescent City hosted the annual Veterans Day Parade and Luncheon, last Saturday.
At 10 am led by the lead vehicle Crescent City Police Department, 21 community entries, marching bands, horse brigades, Hmong Veterans, antique / classic cars and law enforcement /fire emergency vehicles participated along the parade route starting in front of the Veterans Hall, corner of 9th and H Streets.
The traditional luncheon, gratis to all armed service vets followed. VFW Post 1381 Parade coordinator Wade Mays recognized all the vets and their families with special recognition to Hemmingsen Construction, First Service Plumbing, the Pelican Bay Honor Guard, Del Norte Ambulance Explorers and the Crescent City Police Department Explorers, along with those who served our country.
Veterans Day is a Federal Holiday honoring those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Originally labeled Armistice Day, which officially ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.
Many confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day, which recognizes those who served and gave their lives defending the United States.
