The Rogue Community College Board of Education at its Dec. 15 meeting unanimously selected Maria Ramos Underwood to serve as an interim member. She will represent Zone 7 which encompasses the northeast quarter of the city of Medford. The position was filled due to the passing of board member Ron Fox in September.

Ramos has deep understanding of community colleges as an RCC healthcare partner, alumnus of Mesa Community College, an RCC student parent and as a faculty spouse.

Ramos is chief development officer for LaClinica where she has worked for 20 years, developing extensive experience in leadership, program development, marketing, human resources and fundraising. She also leads LaClinica’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion program.

Before joining La Clinica, she served as Dunn House’s first Hispanic outreach advocate and prior to that worked for Early Head Start at Southwest Human Development located in Phoenix.

Ramos also serves as a member on the boards of the Health Care Coalition of Southern Oregon, the Gray Family Foundation and is a steering committee member of All in for Health Care, the team overseeing LaClinica’s regional community health improvement plan.

Ramos was born in Mexico, was a child of seasonal farm workers and grew up in Mesa, Arizona. She relocated to Medford in 1997 from Tempe, Arizona, when her husband Verne was hired by Rogue Community College. The couple has two adult children. She is an avid reader and enjoys traveling with her family.
