The Jedediah Smith Society recently announced its April 2-5 rendezvous trip, which is open to both members and non-members.
Beginning in Crescent City on April 2 and ending at Fort Vancouver on April 5, rendezvous participants will visit several of the places where the famous explorer and fur trader Jedediah Smith sojourned while making his way north in 1828.
Included will be the site of the Umpqua attack and Fort Vancouver. In 1822, Jedediah Smith joined the famous Andrew Henry-William Ashley expedition up the Missouri River and eventually entered the Rocky Mountains where he trapped beaver and located South Pass, an important pathway for thousands of emigrants on the Oregon, Mormon, and California trails.
Smith also led two important expeditions into the American Southwest, ultimately making his way into Mexican California and up the coast to Oregon and Fort Vancouver.
