A structure fire broke out last week in the industrial area along Elk Valley Road, it is the most recent of a string of fires in the area.
Around 7:30 p.m. May 6, Crescent City firefighters responded to a report that a travel trailer had caught fire near the corner of Iowa Street and Elk Valley Road. When firefighters arrived, they found the trailer was parked next to a large propane tank, and between two warehouses, making it difficult to access and more threatening, said Bill Gillespie, chief of the Crescent City Fire Department.
What’s more, initial reports had stated someone could have still been inside the trailer.
However, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire, and in searching through the debris, they determined no one was inside. Later, the person who was reportedly inside showed up at the scene unharmed. There were no injuries, but the trailer was a total loss.
According to Gillespie, the fire likely spread from candles residents stated they left burning. He said transient activity in the area is one of the reasons for a higher concentration of fires.
“We do see quite a few fires along the south end of Elk Valley Road...Either the trailer-RVs catching fire, or the loose structures that they’re building,” said Gillespie.
He said they have also seen a recent uptick in trash and vegetation fires.
