The Golden State and the Beaver State took another step in erasing the thin blue line separating California and Oregon.
The Fred Endert Pool will undergo two major projects that will interrupt service, closing the Crescent City pool for an anticipated 12 weeks. The Pool’s closure will effectuate December 2 and last through February, 2025. The renovations include HVAC and Locker Room floor projects.
The Crescent City swimming pool is the only public pool that operates during winter months in both Del Norte and Curry counties.
Brookings does have a public outdoor pool that is open during the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day).
Recently, the City of Brookings turned over pool management to South Coast Community Acquatics (SCCA). Many Curry County residents use the Fred Endert Pool during the winter months; that option will not be available, this Winter.
SCCA approached Crescent City staff to consider the possibility of a partnership to open the Brookings pool for the winter months.
• SCCA would be responsible for all facility-related costs, including utilities, electricity, propane, chemicals, supplies, insurance and facilities equipment maintenance.
• Crescent City would provide the lifeguards and supervisory staff for program operation and bear the cost.
Pool program would include a limited schedule, mutually agreed upon between Crescent City and SCCA. Morning and afternoon sessions Monday-Saturday are anticipated.
Swimming, Exercise, Recreational swimming and times for swim team training and the possibility of swim lessons may be included.
SCCA has committed to keep the outdoor pool heated at 83 degrees.
The City estimates the costs of the three month Program will be an approximately $10,000-to a high of $18,000 to $28,000. The proposed agreement calls for a 50/50 revenue split.
Councilors expressed their enthusiastic support as final details are worked out.
The thin blue line between the States continues to fade.
