Crescent City has its first hospice care open and ready to serve. Jamie Daughtery, chief executive officer of Coastal Home Health and Hospice, announced the office is now open at 786 H St. At present, Coastal Hospice serves the Medicare-only community with a full list of qualified professionals serving the needs of individuals who have six months or less to live.
Mark Silver, MD, is medical director who will work alongside a team of registered nurses, social workers, clergy and other dedicated volunteers who provide the highest level of dignity for those who are in the last stages of life. Pet Peace of Mind provides canine support.
Coastal Hospice is fully equipped and will administer compassionate care to those in need.
Sutter Coast Hospital is in the final stages of full accreditation and certification. Director of Hospital Operations Ellie Popadic awaits a visit from the Department of Public Health within the next 60 days to review the Sutter Coast hospice application. Popadic expressed her excitement in offering this much-needed service.
The genesis for the discussion on hospice care resulted from the passing of Del Norte County environmental engineer John “Brian” McNally in 2019. At the time of his passing at 76, there was no hospice care offered in Del Norte County. Brian’s last wish before his passing was for this community to introduce hospice care. Brian said “everyone has the right to die well.”
Despite a state-wide moratorium on issuing new licenses, two applicants made successful efforts to introduce hospice care to Del Norte County: Coastal Home Heath and Hospice is fully accredited and Sutter Coast hospice will be operational in the Fall.
