Del Norte Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution announced that March 29 is Vietnam War Veterans Day, a day to fly the flag to honor, and in remembrance of, those who served in the Vietnam War.
Wendy Malone, DAR “Service to Veterans Committee” chairman, in reviewing the history of Vietnam War Veterans Day, stated the “Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017” was signed into law by President Donald Trump, declaring National Vietnam War Veterans Day as March 29, in perpetuity. Two million, seven hundred thousand troops served during the Vietnam War Conflict era, and many of those who returned home were subjected to unkind treatment. Thirteen of Del Norte’s own young servicemen were slain on the battlefields of Vietnam. Del Norte DAR’s pictorial and historical memorial of these Del Norte servicemen, is on display in the Veterans Memorial Hall on H Street.”
Del Norte Chapter DAR is a staunch supporter of the military, assisting the Del Norte County Veterans Service Office with supplies and the sponsored veterans’ activities. DAR assists with the placing of flags for Memorial Day, Veterans Day, participation in veterans activities on those days and Veterans Resource Day. Del Norte DAR assisted in the research for the servicemen from Del Norte who served during Vietnam, which was valuable information for the Point of Honor endeavor. The Rocky Peterson Flag Memorial at Peterson Park is another example of DAR support and recognition for our Veterans.
Del Norte DAR member, Pauline Cramer, is a National Society DAR appointee to the “Veterans Administration Voluntary Service” Committee and is assigned to San Francisco VA Medical Center. Wendy Malone, in her “Service to Veterans Committee,” chairs the “Wreaths Across America” Committee. These are a small part of DAR’s support to the Veterans.
Regent Cori Higgins urges all residents of Del Norte County on Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29, to proudly fly the flag from their homes, their businesses and from every public building to honor and remember those who served in the Vietnam War.
