The time was exactly 10:49AM, Thursday when cell phones across the North Coast California and South Coast Oregon went berserk, warning of a possible tsunami. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported a 7.0 Earthquake just off-shore near Rio Del.
Tsunami warning followed. Board of Supervisors Chairman Dean Wilson told The Triplicate NOAA took precautionary measures and asked Del Norters to seek higher ground as the sensitive wave measuring equipment was unable to equate tsunami impact and as a precaution, asked the public to move inland. For a short period of time, the traffic was overloaded on streets and highways across Del Norte
Larger Harbor vessels had about an hour window to move from the shallow harbor to deeper waters, mitigating possible damage to their commercial boats.
By 12:31PM, NOAA pulled the warning. Del Norte and Crescent City returned to normal. No injuries or property damage were reported.
