Folks, it’s that time of year again: Autumn is here and Black Bears are entering a temporary physiological state known as hyperphagia also known as the fall feeding frenzy where bears consume as much as they can to bring their fat storage to a level  and where the Ursa Family can survive the quickly arriving winter months.

In the frenzy period, the ubiquitous Black Bear can consume 20,000-24,000 calories per day and can gain multiple pounds during this frenzy.

CDFW urges you to be “Bearwise,” which includes using bear-resistant garbage carts, removing bird feeders, storing pet food securly inside and cleaning outdoor grills regularly. Bears have a keen sense of smell. Going up and use your garbage disposal. Secure foods and garbage away from Bear scent. Any questions, please contact DFWD at (916) 358-2917. AND….Please don’t feed the bears.
