The master postal box on Loren Avenue outside the Redwood West subdivision has been broken into several times, according to local homeowners.
Homeowners who the Triplicate have spoken with said they are very upset with the U.S. Post Office policy regarding the postal box issues.
They said they are required to pick up mail at the main Post Office until the necessary postal key at the Loren Avenue box can be switched out and normal mail delivery can be resumed, following the string of thefts.
“The inconvenience posed on the homeowner is outrageous,” Redwood resident Gary Manning said. “The long line snaking out the Post Office front door is intolerable. I feel badly for the clerks who must continually be up and down retrieving the mail stored in the back. It’s got to be fatiguing by the end of the day.”
Homeowner Tom Nelson said he simply wants to be communicated with.
“The Post Office needs to talk with me,” Nelson said. “It’s hard to get a straight answer from them. I’ve been told only one individual from Eureka is able to come up and change the master lock on the big box. Where’s the master key?”
Homeowner Jay Chernak said he agreed with Nelson, adding that Redwood West is one of several community boxes that has been broken into. Chernak said he believes as many as 1,000 people are now retrieving their mail at the Post Office.
“The mail deposit box outside situates Redwood West in an exposed, open area, with no homeowner view on Loren Avenue,” homeowner Vinnie Mendolia said. “The Post Office should re-situate a new pad within the subdivision.”
While homeowner Andy Pozzi doesn’t blame the Post Office for the thefts but did express his frustration as well.
“We homeowners live in a bureaucratic sea of red tape,” Pozzi said. “It’s been two months I’ve had to make a 24-mile round trip to the Crescent City Post Office, wait in a long line and sometimes, there’s no mail delivery.”
The Triplicate reached out to Crescent City Postmaster Susan Vargas for an update. Vargas had not responded to our inquiries by press time.
