Crescent City, CA – In order to perform annual road maintenance and improvements in anticipation of a busy summer, the portion of scenic Howland Hill Road which winds through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park will be closed to all vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic for one week beginning Sunday evening June 12. The road will be closed Monday through Friday. Work is expected to be completed for reopening by late afternoon Friday, June 17th.
Road maintenance requires heavy machinery. For visitor and employee safety and protection of natural resources, it is necessary to close this narrow gravel roadway to all public motorized vehicles, and pedestrian and bicycle traffic while the work is being conducted. Locked gates at each end of the roadway will block access for vehicles.
Alternative scenic drives for exploring the beautiful old-growth forests of Redwood National and State Parks include: Walker Road, Hwy. 199, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and Bald Hills Road.
