What began as a simple request to approve new procedures for the Volunteer Camp Host and Volunteer Caretaker programs, has been pulled for additional discussion and several options on county policy for the legal concealed carry permit.
Risk Manager Whitney Pincomb requested supervisors approve and adopt the new Volunteer Camp Host and Volunteer Caretaker programs and authorize the director of Building and Maintenance and Parks to implement both programs.
“Not so fast,” according to at least three supervisors, who agreed to table the consent agenda item for additional discussion and consideration of options associated with a legal concealed carry weapon permit.
Most of the language presented to supervisors on both documents was fairly tame and non-controversial until Pincomb’s revelation of the weapons policy on county property.
Self-defense of one’s domicile came up and appeared to be in conflict with county policy.
Pincomb cautioned the board on possible exposure of liability risk for camp hosts and visitors who are armed.
The volunteer camp host program includes the following parks: Florence Keller; Ruby Van Deventer; Clifford Kamph.
The volunteer camp caretaker program includes Bar-O Boys Ranch and Pacific Shores Watchman Station.
Supervisors Joey Borges, Dean Wilson and Darrin Short expressed reservation concerning language involving concealed weapons and requested the item be tabled until the next meeting to address the conflict associated with the legal permit for a concealed weapon.
Risk management pledged to come back at the next meeting with options on the CCW language.
The board met again on Tuesday, January 9, at 10 a.m. at the Flynn Center.
