The future is uncertain for the Java Hut, at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and North Fred Haight Drive, after the kiosk was demolished by a suspected drunk driver Aug. 26.

Owner Kristina Glossop said it’s too early in the process of dealing with the loss of her business to make a long-term decision. She said the structure is a complete loss.

Karen McGuire, 58, remains in the Del Norte County Jail after being booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, according to records on the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office Online Information System.

The one-car crash occurred at 11:20 p.m. when McGuire reportedly swerved off the highway and into the coffee kiosk. No one was inside the building at the time of the accident. No one was injured.

Glossop said she has owned the Java Hut for the past three years, and that the business had been at the Smith River location for more than 15 years.
