Crescent City Police Chief Ivan Minsal is scheduled to retire Sept. 8, according to city officials.

The city began a search for his replacement by sending out an employment flier to 200 Peace Officer Standards and Training-certified agencies, said City Manager Eric Wier.

The job search will close Sept. 16, at which point city officials will narrow their search of qualified candidates.

Meantime, Wier said, the city likely will name an interim chief of police following Minsal’s final day on the job.

Also, the city closed its search for a new school resource officer this week and probably will make a hire from a list of candidates in the next couple weeks, Wier said.

That position opened when Department of Justice funding for a school resource officer ended last year.

Wier said funding for a school officer subsequently was found through a state grant that would be used to hire a part-time officer either at Del Norte High School or Crescent Elk Middle School.

The previous, full-time position would be used to provide for other police department patrol needs, the city manager said.
