A manufactured home at 1010 Butte St was destroyed by fire this past Saturday. Sheriff / Coroner Garrett Scott identified the victim as 74 year old Leah Smith, a disabled woman who perished in the blaze, shortly after the noon hour, August 2.
Crescent Fire and Protection responded to the 9-1-1 call and arrived on scene within three to four minutes, and fought the blaze for two hours.
With the aid of neighbors, a male occupant was able to escape from the fire but neighbors and firefighters were unable to safely remove Ms. Smith from the fully-engulfed blaze.
Assisting Crescent Fire were units from Cal Fire, Pelican Bay and Ft. Dick.
Crescent Fire is investigating the source of the deadly blaze.
