Over this past weekend, the Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue held their two-day Winter X Survival Training.
On Saturday, February 25th, 2023, SAR members meet up at a pre-determined location up Hunter Creek on South Coast Lumber Property and set up the Incident Command, where they had training on overnight survival.
The overnight Winter X Survival is a requirement of certifications, along with other required training. SAR members learn and hone their skills with shelter and fire building and spend the entire night out in the elements.
Four new SAR members braved the wet cold, snowy weather with just what they carried in their survival packs. Other SAR members who had previously completed the training kept hourly checks on the new SAR members throughout the night, making sure they could safely compete the training.
The next morning, all members visited each of the locations of the camps and discussed what worked best and what could be improved upon. When all SAR members were back at the Incident Command post, they all had a hot meal and then cleaned up the area as if we had not been there.
The citizens of Curry County and beyond are very fortunate to have such dedicated SAR members who volunteer their time, put themselves in harm’s way and to help those who become lost or stranded.
SAR members train in a variety of situations every month throughout the year, to include survival training, water rescue, rope rescue, ground search among others. Why do they do this, “So Others May Live”!
