The Community Shoe Bank will hold its final shoe bank on Oct. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brookings Elks Lodge, lower level. Along with free shoes, they also gives away socks and winter coats.
“We have been operating for 10 years now, and it is time to close up,” said Linda Schreiber. “t has run its course. Attendance had dropped even before COVID, but now it is really low, even though we have set up outdoors.
“I believe with children not doing sports or attending school, and many persons working from home, the shoe need or priority has decreased.
It is a lot of work to set up and take down, and my volunteers have dwindled, so it is time to close up.
Previously during back to school days, the shoe bank has given out 40 to 50 pairs of shoes in a single day.
Schreiber will continue to distribute shoes to other charities or services in the community that help those in need after Oct. 3.
