Every year, participants from around the globe practice their earthquake preparedness on the third Thursday of October, known as International ShakeOut Day. Last year, this included over 21 million participants in the United States alone, and over 67 million participants worldwide.

Here in Del Norte County, the Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services knows disasters and it also knows that it’s best to “Be Prepared, Not Scared.” As such, the OES invites citizens to participate in a week of earthquake preparedness activities leading up to and including the big ShakeOut.

Begin by heading to www.shakeout.org to register your commitment to participate in ShakeOut this year. Then, join the OES each day on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DelNorteOfficeOfEmergencyServices/ (you do not need a Facebook account to do so) while they explore Earthquake Country’s 7 Steps to Earthquake Safety. The OES will share tips and tricks to improve earthquake preparedness around your home or business.

Finally, join the OES Oct. 15 while they ShakeOut by emailing your best home, school or business Drop, Cover, and Hold pictures to kymmie.scott@co.del-norte.ca.us.

The OES will share the fun with the community on its website and social media pages.
