Roger “Papa Bear” Christenson

Roger “Papa Bear” Christenson, 86, passed away on February 18, 2020 in Crescent City, CA. He was born April 28, 1933 in Albert Lee, MN. Roger grew up in Minnesota where he attended school.

He worked in heavy construction jobs in many states and in Saudi Arabia. He went to Saudi Arabia in April 1975 for Green Construction of Des Moines, IA. Roger worked on a naval base and he worked for two years for Alsaran, a Saudi construction company doing major earthwork projects for the Royal Commission and Saudi Oil Company. He worked for Sadiq Trading Establishment building major concrete paving and small earthworks.  Roger went to Thailand to recruit workers and met Dang. They spent a few more years in Saudi Arabia doing various earth work and paving projects then eventually moving to California.

In California, he worked on the CA Aqueduct and the relocation of I-5 in the 60’s and 70’s. At the end of his career, he worked for Hemmingson Construction as an estimator and project manager.

Roger was fondly referred to around the community as “The Old Bear”. He was well liked and respected by all that knew him.

Surviving are sons Bruce (Gina), Timothy (Laurie), daughters Kathy, Linda (Martin), and Nancy. Papa Bear leaves behind grandchildren Christina, Amanda, Timothy, Victoria, Kjrsten, Aleks, Taylor, Dacian and Bruce. Brother Nels Christenson (Elnora) of MO, sisters Ardis Swenson (Carl) of MN and Carolyn Nelson (George) of WA.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the New Life Community Church, 424 2nd Street, Crescent City at 1:00 pm with Pastor Larry Read officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests cash only donations to be made in Roger’s name to fund the activities program at Crescent City Skilled Nursing, 1280 Marshall Street, contact Letty Lopez, or the choice of one’s favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.
