Ron “Candy Man” Rooney was the 7th of 12 children born to William and Mary Rooney in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
After serving in the Army for 3 years, he moved to Southern California where he worked for 26 years in the oilfields of Long Beach. He met Lorelei (Lori) Helstowski and they were married in Hollywood, CA in 1967. In 1990, they moved from Cerritos, CA to Crescent City, CA with their daughter Darlene and son Bryan. They owned and operated Ron’s Hauling until retiring in 2015, after Ron was 84 years young.
Ron enjoyed salmon fishing with his wife, her brother Stan and Ira Main, a long-time friend. He and Lori also liked their after-breakfast game of Cribbage.
He loved to dance at the Del Norte County Fair Grounds to the music of the Del Norte High School Band.
He was well known for pocketsful of butterscotch candy, giving them to friends and strangers alike, with a warm smile a “God Bless You,” which he did for 40 years.
He was an active member of the Crescent City Church of the Nazarene for 30 years and was also involved with Solid Rock bible studies for 6 years.
Ron is now in Heaven with his lord, probably still handing out candy, as he walks and dances on the streets of gold.
Ron is survived by his wife of 54 years. His children are, Susan Rocca of Las Vegas, NV, Rhonda Rooney (deceased), Linda Rooney of Billings, MT, Darlene Rooney of Crescent City, CA, Bryan Rooney (wife Jessica) of Newberg, OR, and Mike Monday of Crescent City (adopted with love). Grandchildren: Albert, Andrea, Lydia, Michael, Bella, and Ryan; and Austin, the only great-grandchild.
His 4 remaining siblings are: Ralph (Mickey) Rooney, Elaine Popp, Jeanette Hannig and Harold (Butch) Rooney, all in Minnesota.
Preceding Ron in death are his parents and siblings, Dennis, Donald, Irene, Ione, Patrick, Louella, and Marie. A Memorial service is planned for March 6, 2021 at 1 pm at the Crescent City Church of the Nazarene, 224 F St, Crescent City, CA 95531.
