Regarding the Electoral College, Patricia J. Estlund of Crescent City went right to “the source,” the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention of 1787. She cites two arguments entered into the record on July 19. But on July 16, after much debate and deliberation, the delegates took action on a more foundational issue: they approved The Great Compromise, giving every state, large and small, an equal number of senators. This put into operation the principle that states are sovereign and have an equal place at the table in governance.
We don’t have a “Peoples’ President.” POTUS stands for “President of the United STATES.” The delegates were intent upon preserving the Union. I submit there has never been a greater need to do so than in 2021.
