Dear Editor: Del Norte Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution sends thanks and appreciation for the informative article written by your ace reporter, David Hayes, and published in the Sept. 14. Triplicate, “DAR plans local awareness campaign for Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23.”

The photo and article hopefully raised the local consciousness for U.S. Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, and the study and knowledge of the document, which is the basis of our system of government.

Also, It was fun to see the photo and headlines on the online issue of The Triplicate. Really looks great!

There are a couple clarifications regarding work on the Veterans Cemetery, one of our historic preservation projects. Del Norte Chapter Daughters only clean the headstones with proper permission. We assist the VFW and other groups in placing and removing flags at the Veterans Cemetery for Memorial Day and Veterans Day remembrances.

In 1949, the 5,000-acre Tribute Grove at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park was purchased in tribute to, and memory of, the military of WWII. Funds to purchase the final 500 acres for the Tribute Grove were raised by DAR members all over the United States. That final 500 acres capped the 5,000 acres of the grove.

The DAR Tribute Grove Monument stands near the Jed Smith Redwoods State Park Visitors Center.

Thanks, also, for the plug on our Wreaths Across America campaign. The goal is to help decorate national cemeteries across the land with beautiful wreaths on every grave of our fallen heroes. Sales begin after Sept. 21. Contact any DAR member for information.

Again, our thanks and appreciation for this fine article promoting U.S. Constitution Week. Keep up the good work in promoting news of local interest and participation.
