Fatal traffic accident

A 34-year-old Smith River man died Aug. 1 in a single vehicle rollover accident on Oceanview Drive north of Peregrine Lane.

A 34-year-old Smith River man died Aug. 1 in a single vehicle rollover accident.

According to a California Highway Patrol Crescent City Area report, the CHP Humboldt Dispatch Center received a report at about 12:45 a.m. of a traffic crash on Oceanview Drive, north of Peregrine Lane. Officers of CHP Crescent City responded. According to the report, the driver of a 1999 Ford Ranger, who has not yet been identified, was traveling northbound on Oceanview Drive.

The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a mailbox before traveling down the embankment. The truck overturned multiple times, ejecting the driver, before coming to a rest blocking the southbound lane of Oceanview Drive.

The driver succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

Oceanview Drive was completely closed for approximately three hours due to the accident.

The incident is still under investigation.
