A 37-year-old male from Roseburg, Ore., was struck around 9:30 p.m. last night by a hit and run driver while walking southbound on the west shoulder of U.S. Highway 101, north of Timbers Boulevard in Smith River. He later died from his injuries.
According to a California Highway Patrol press release, an unknown vehicle traveling southbound struck the pedestrian and fled the seen in the southbound direction.
The male was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City by Del Norte Ambulance and later life flighted to Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, Ore., where he succumbed to his injuries.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation and the name of the deceased is being held, pending notification to next of kin. Other information regarding the hit and run vehicle is being withheld at this time due to the ongoing investigation, according to the press release.
