The California Community College Men's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCMBCA) has named Ryan Bisio, head coach of the College of the Redwoods Men’s Basketball team, as the State Coach of the Year for Northern California, following a stunning season that saw the Corsairs setting the single-season program record of 26 wins and for earning the coveted title of GVC champions for the third straight year. The Northern California region consists of 47 men’s basketball programs
Coach Bisio was nominated by Rob Hoyte, head coach of Columbia College and the Central Valley conference representative. Bisio's nomination received a unanimous vote by league representatives from each of the six Northern Conferences. The team also advanced to the state playoffs, where they made it to the third round before losing to the eventual state champions.
Reacting to the news, Bisio expressed his gratitude for the recognition and thanked his players for their hard work throughout the season. "I'm deeply humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude in receiving this award,” said Bisio. “With so many talented and inspiring coaches in the California Community College system, this recognition is very special to me."
"The award would not be possible without the genuine support of so many wonderful individuals within our program, athletic department, and campus community,” he continued. “I want to especially acknowledge Bob Brown for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to lead our basketball program."
"I also want to thank our Assistant Coach Blake Rossman and our Associate Head Coach Justin Claus. This award would not be possible without Justin. We are one entity, and the collaborative nature in which we work has brought out the best in all of us. Justin is my basketball soul mate, and I am so incredibly proud of his evolution as a leader."
"Most importantly,” he continues, “I want to thank the wonderful student-athletes we have the privilege to coach. The trust, heart, and dedication of our players is the reason our program has enjoyed competitive success and statewide visibility. I am honored to have been given this recognition.”
The College of the Redwoods Athletic Director, Bob Brown, also expressed his happiness at Bisio's nomination, stating that it was well-deserved recognition for a coach who had worked tirelessly to build a strong and competitive team. "Our athletic department could not be prouder of Coach Bisio and his staff,” says Brown.
“He and his staff have elevated our men’s basketball program to historic levels for CR these past three seasons. The student athletes who have also been on this journey have been nothing short of phenomenal players, students, and citizens in our community. This is the most prestigious recognition of a coach at our level of competition and Ryan is a worthy recipient.”
Coach Bisio also received the Golden Valley Conference (GVC) Coach of the Year award earlier in the season.
