For new Del Norte High School head coach Nick White, football is a family affair.
His brother, Chris, will serve as Del Norte’s offensive coordinator this season. Another brother, Josh, is an assistant at Clovis High, and is a former college coordinator. And brother, Jason, is the head coach at Eureka High School, which has been undefeated in regular-season play for the past two seasons.
Nick White said he has been communicating and learning from all of his brothers, everything from Xs and Os to how to run a program.
It’s been a steep, but rewarding, learning curve. “Every day is a football day,” Nick he said.
-- North Coast Section officials have changed the way it determines the playoffs in 2019. This year, Eureka, Fortuna and Del Norte all are in Division 5. The smallest member of the Big Four Conference, St. Bernard’s, is in Division 6. Just eight teams will qualify for the postseason from each division.
-- Friday’s Del Norte opponent, Moreau Catholic, is the No. 1-ranked team in Division 6, with the Crusaders of St. Bernard’s coming in at No. 3. Up in Division 5, it’s Eureka atop the rankings, followed by Fortuna at 4 and Del Norte ranked sixth.
-- Del Norte’s record in season openers has been hit and miss over the past 10 years, winning five and losing five. Last year, the Warriors won easily at home, knocking off Ferndale 40-0.
-- Handling kicking duties will be either Kenji Adams Lee or Geo Gonzalez, for the Warriors. Adams-Lee was 14 of 24 on extra points in 2018 before being hurt; Gonzalez was 5 of 9. Del Norte must also replace Ethan Price as punter.
-- Del Norte will open its home schedule next week on Friday, Aug. 30, when it plays host to Yreka at Mike Whalen Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Between the junior varsity and varsity games, the Warriors will honor its latest inductees into the Del Norte High Athletic Hall of Fame.
-- The other Big Four Conference teams open their seasons this week. On Thursday, Fortuna will take on Cardinal Newman High, with the game in Heraldsburg. Placer will be battling at Eureka on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the same time St. Bernard’s travels to El Molino.
